So with a lot of todays music being full of “hooks” and “good vocals”, a lot of indie artists have been rebelling by releasing raw albums with abandoned experiments, improvisation, and false starts. One such band is Akron/Family and their freshman self titled release is very compelling.
They are four guys who came to NYC to make music, while simultaneously growing beards. Ryan, who sings lead on most of the songs, has a pure voice that evokes a lot of emotion. Their site describes their style as Psychedelic/Bluegrass/Comedy. What the heck does that mean? I have heard them described at folkwave, I think that that description is a lot more accurate.
What is the good news? They will be coming to an Atlantic town near you! From March 24th -28th, they hit Sackville, Halifax, Saint John and Portland. I am going to try my damndest to make it to the SJ show… Enjoy!
