10 Provinces Special: Sloan

Sloan formed in 1991 at NSCAD, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They created their own record Murderecords label for their own releases as well as those of other local bands, starting with their Peppermint EP. In 1992 the band released their first full-length, Smeared, under Geffen Records.

Even though Sloan’s second album Twice Removed received no promotion from Geffen, it sold very well in Canada. Spin magazine named it one of the “best albums you didn’t hear” in 1994. Chart magazine named it the best Canadian album ever in a 1996 poll and again in 2005. The band now has nine albums under their belts as well as a greatest hits record. They currently have a U.S. record deal with Koch.

Another interesting Sloan fact is that all four members of Sloan write their own songs and tend to switch up their instrument accordingly. Chris Murphy plays bass, vocals, sometimes drums, and sometimes guitar. Jay Ferguson plays guitar, vocals, and sometimes bass. Andrew Scott plays drums, sometimes keyboard, sometimes vocals, and sometimes guitar. Patrick Pentland plays guitar and sings. Enjoy!

Is that you, T-Lo? If not, I'm sure he would approve this post.

Anonymous as I am, I do indeed approve, but I wasn't responsible for that last one. By the way, did you know that New Braunschweig's own Saint John River is also known as the Rhine of North America? ... Frederictal by the Rhine ... I think I'll have to check it out, maybe next week sometime.
