10 Provinces Special: The Weakerthans

Our next province feature will be up later today. But first, I want to highlight another essential Canadian band that probably doesn't get the recognition it deserves outside of this country.

The Weakerthans are fronted by John K Samson, formerly of Winnipeg punk band Propagandhi. The band are a very competent four-piece, but it has to be said that Samson's remarkable voice and lyrics are the true driving force of the group. I think these lines from Left & Leaving, the title track from the band's second album, are testament enough to some of the great things this band has to offer:

Memory will rust and erode into lists
of all that you gave me:
Some matches, a blanket, this pain in my chest,
the best parts of lonely,
duct tape and soldered wires,
new words for old desires,
and every birthday card I threw away.
