First, a quick notice. Due to changes in our hosting, any old mp3 links are no longer active. They are not going to be fixed, because I just really don't have time for that. I apologize for the inconvenience, but things will be getting back to normal with all new posts.
Now, on to the new!
I'm still reeling from last weekend. I drove to Montreal last Sunday with good friends to take in some concerts. While we may have it very nice here on the east coast, we don't get many of the touring bands that hit larger cities to our west. We ended up going to see The Decemberists on Sunday night and then And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead with Blood Brothers on Monday. I'll get to the Monday show in a later post, since it will also include some photos.
I've enjoyed The Decemberists for a while now, but to be honest, I'd never felt compelled enough to pick up any of their full albums. That all changed this weekend. The six-piece band gracefully swept through a set that include all of my favourite songs and a handful of new ones that I wasn't familiar with yet.
My first observation was that Colin Meloy is a much more interesting frontman than I'd ever thought to give him credit for. He sings spectacularly live, he's incredibly charismatic, and he tells some really great stories. For example, about the time he became the president of his high school French club by "dubious means." He goes on to admit that his limited French vocabulary would restrict him to conversations about apples and potatoes.
My second observation was that the band also includes five other extremely talented people that we don't hear very much about. I understand that a personality like Meloy's is too compelling to ignore, but he also happens to surround himself with great company. These certifiable pros moved seamlessly through a set that required each of them to play numerous instruments in order to recreate the elegant arrangements of the albums.
In conclusion, if you're ever given an opportunity to see The Decemberists, take it! You'll be doing yourself a favour.
