Speaking of local festivals, I think everyone was at least a little bit surprised to see Bloc Party show up in the roster for this year's Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival in Fredericton. I'm not exactly sure how that deal went down, but kudos to the organizers for making it happen and venturing outside the normally genre boundaries of the festival. Other names turning heads this year include Buddy Guy and Derek Trucks Band. Tickets go on sale Saturday, July 19th.For even more excitement, it seems Bloc Party also has a new single out called "Mercury." It's a bit rougher and more jittery than the blatantly electro-pop "Flux" before it, but it still feels like it's playing up a similar side of the band.

No kidding RE: the surprise. A lot of other jazz and blues festivals use the terms really broadly and book a wide range of artists, but until now Fredericton hasn't really been approaching its festival that way. I'm not a fan of Bloc Party personally, but it sure makes me optimistic for the future of the festival. Maybe they'll bring in someone who floats my boat in 2009...
i love the raw punkish energy of their first album and it surprises me to admit it, but they somehow still retain that edge even in these electro "pop" songs. i don't even know if i *like* flux or mercury, but still, i feel like it works for them - they do pull it off.
